At least 15 people died in a road accident outside Naivasha town on Saturday night.
Witnesses told the Sunday Nation that the accident involved five vehicles; a lorry, a tour van, a matatu and two private cars.
Naivasha Deputy OCPD Paul Korir confirmed that 15 people died on the spot. Injured passengers were rushed to hospitals in Naivasha town.
Doctors and paramedics in the various hospitals had a busy night attending to the victims.
The accident scene was littered with mangled wreckages of the accident vehicles and personal belongings of the victims.
Recovery efforts were hampered by darkness as police and rescuers struggled to retrieve victims from the extensively damaged vehicles.
Last month, a road accident on the same road claimed three AFC Leopards fans who were on their way back to Nairobi after a football match in Naivasha.
In September, three people including a student died on the Naivasha-Mai-Mahiu road in different road accidents.
Transport minister Amos Kimunya said on Thursday that there was a significant increase in road accidents in the country with about 2,600 deaths being reported by the end of September.
The minister announced that the government would introduce stringent measures to curb accidents including introduction of a tachometer, the equivalent of an airplane’s black box, to be installed in all vehicles to record their speed over a period of time.
The stretch between Nakuru and Naivasha is prone to accidents because of the high number of commuters using the route to western Kenya.
The unimproved status of the road has also contributed to the high number of accidents.
